TERMINOLOGY

Types of outdoor structures

You have many options to choose from when you are considering a shade structure. Knowing the correct terms will help you to explain your goals and ideas.

Pergola – [pur-guh-luh]

Dictionary: An arbor formed of horizontal trelliswork supported on columns or posts, over which vines or other plants are trained. An outdoor shade structure with an open trellis or ceiling, generally constructed of wood, with large wood beams and wood rafters for the ceiling. A pergola generally has four supporting columns or posts, with open sides.

Gazebo – [guh-zey-boh]

Dictionary: 1. A structure, as an open or latticework pavilion. A small roofed structure that is screened on all sides or draped with curtains, used for outdoor entertaining and dining. A gazebo is can be hexagonal, or it may match the architecture of the house. They also support climbing plants.

Pavillion â€“ [puh-vil-yn]

Dictionary: In architectural terminology, it refers to a small secondary structure that is either positioned separately or as an attachment to a main building. Often the pavillions function is an object of pleasure. 

​

Carport 

Dictionary: A shelter for a car consisting of a roof supported on posts, built beside a house. Great for AZ heat and summer sun which can wreak havoc on our cars parts and paint.

Patio Cover

Dictionary: small structure connecting your indoor and outdoor spaces. 

​

Cabana

Dictionary: A cabana (from the Spanish word for hut) has three lightweight "walls," with one open wall facing a pool. The walls are often fabric curtains, drapes or shades, intended to block sunlight.
